Technical Session: Next Gen Hot Car Safety: Beyond Door Switches and Seat Weight Sensors to Full Monitoring of Entire Vehicle Cabins
Wednesday June 25, 2025 10:30am - 10:50am PDT
Forty-five to 60 children die each year in the US and Canada of heat stroke from being left in a car or entering the car and becoming locked in.   Newer model cars only provide a reminder to check the back seat upon turning off the engine, but many children are injured or killed long after a car is turned off while it is parked in a driveway or on the street.

For example, hours or even days after the car was last used, a child might enter the car to retrieve a toy or book and become trapped inside due to child locks on the back doors. This presentation will cover the circumstances that are still extremely dangerous, the available technologies and their coverage strengths and gaps, and the emerging technologies using in-cabin sensors to continuously monitor for trapped children long after the driver has exited the vehicle.

Technical Session: Rediscovery of the Wiegand Effect - Sensing & Energy Harvesting for the IoT
Wednesday June 25, 2025 11:30am - 11:50am PDT
The Wiegand effect was widely used in rotation sensors and key cards. Over the last years Hall-sensors and RFID have taken over these applications and the macroscopic extension of the Barkhausen effect was about to be forgotten.

The revival of the Wiegand wire comes with low power electronics. The energy of a single pulse can power counters, detect position changes and even power ultra-wideband-transmission (UWB) systems. The technology is now widely accepted replacing batteries or gears in rotary multi-turn encoders and metering devices.

Current R&D projects aim on optimizing the Wiegand wire and sensors to harvest energy for a variety of battery-less sensors and wireless transmission which will be key for the Internet-of-Things.

Workshop: Innovation Review on LIDAR
Wednesday June 25, 2025 1:00pm - 3:30pm PDT
The Autotech Council invites you to join our meeting where we feature presentations from high-quality innovators, startups, and scale-ups that are developing cutting-edge LiDAR solutions, from improving its accuracy, resolution, speed, and range to reducing its cost and size. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn, connect and explore potential partnerships.

LiDAR, or Light Detection and Ranging, has emerged as a critical perception technology with applications across the automotive sector from vehicle safety and self-driving to robotics and industrial automation. Innovation in LiDAR has been strong and steady over the past 5 years, with almost 30 LiDAR companies having presented their technologies to the Autotech Council over that time. There is still a lot of new technology to discover, and new companies, putting LiDar to work across mobility and transportation.

LiDAR offers precise sensing and perception. Compared to cameras, which rely on interpretive image processing to estimate depth, LiDAR directly measures thousands of distances by emitting laser pulses in various directions and timing the reflected light. This results in a more accurate and reliable 3D point-cloud representation of the surroundings, crucial for applications like autonomous navigation and robotics.

This agenda highlights the innovation in LiDAR sensors, from improvement in accuracy, resolution, speed, and range to reductions in cost and size, and a host of interesting LiDAR applications, including:
  • Autonomous vehicles. ADAS and self-driving
  • Manufacturing
  • Municipal infrastructure
  • Manufacturing & industry
  • Robotics
  • Surveying & Mapping
One of the key trends we’ll discuss is the increasing affordability of LiDAR sensors. As production scales and technology matures, LiDAR sensors are becoming more accessible for various applications. This is particularly important for many proposed use cases, where cost has been a significant barrier to widespread adoption. But as that barrier shrinks, expect to see increased use. There’s a version of Moore’s Law for LiDARs, where performance is increasing as cost is decreasing.

Another important trend on our RADAR (so to speak) is the growing emphasis on sensor diversity in autonomous systems. By combining LiDAR with other sensors like cameras and RADAR, developers can create a more robust and reliable perception system. Using different RF emissions, the sensor suite gets more diverse, and is less likely to be foiled by atmospheric conditions (direct sun, rain, ice) or hacks. This is crucial for redundancy that increases the safety and reliability of autonomous machines operating in complex and dynamic environments.

Join Autotech Council members, carmakers, Tier 1 vendors, mobility investors and cutting edge startups for a deep dive into what’s new in the world of LiDAR.

  • REGISTRATION: $200 (free for members)

The rise of secure, connected edge devices is reaching every aspect of our work and personal lives. We are surrounded by smart, connected, and complex systems. The smart connected and secure world of the future will be delivered with a seamless blend of multi-scale sensors and for ubiquitous computing and communication for on-device decision making. With more and more competitive content included in these edge devices, the complexities and hence power consumption of these devices are increasing at a rapid pace. It will be imperative to have optimized integration of sensors-based condition monitoring at edge nodes to cut the complexity of the overall system. This session will unpack driving trends, market requirements and challenges to suggest new ways of working for sustainable growth. In this session, I will expand on few specific application examples to summarize how to design better and optimized edge solutions using sensing technologies.
